Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass
The Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass can be performed with minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques. Using five or six small incisions in the upper abdomen, a camera and specialized instruments are used to perform a standard Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass.
The operation involves creating a small pouch out of the upper part of the stomach and bypassing part of the small intestine. As a result, food intake is restricted and some nutrients and calories are not absorbed resulting in significant weight loss. In fact, more than 80% of patients will lose at least half of their excess weight over the long term.
The advantages of the Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass are fewer wound complications, less postoperative pain, and a quicker recovery. Patients are typically discharged home within 48 hours of the operation.
